Woollahra Point

Woollahra Point is the north-eastern tip of Point Piper. The name is believed to have evolved from its aboriginal name 'Willara.' The interpretations of the word Willara have been too many. The term Willara is believed by some to mean 'the moon.' Daniel Southwell who first recorded the name in 1788 translated the word 'woo-la-ra' as 'the look-out.' In 1856, when Daniel Cooper chose the name 'Woollahra' for his prospective home at Point Piper, the name was recorded as the aboriginal equivalent of 'camp' or 'meeting ground.' In 1860, when the municipality was newly formed, Woollahra was adopted as its official name.

The multi-cultural population of Woollahra has contributed much to the cultural heritage of the place and to the immense passion of its community for arts and culture. Woollahra has a large number of art galleries and its own share of cultural activities and events throughout the year. The Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize hosted in October/November every year is the only national prize of its genre in the whole of Australia.
