The Water Police

The Water Police is a police force whose main duty is rescue and it is estimated that around 400 people are rescued from the harbour every year by the Water Police who work arm in arm with Flood and Rescue Squads, the Police Diving Squad and other such services. The New South Wales Water Police is one of the best services of its kind in the world. John Cadman who was the superintendent of the Rowboat Patrol had his residence on the western side of Sydney Cove. This cottage became the water police station after his retirement in 1846. Later in 1865, they moved to Dawes Point, their present headquarters.
