Shopping Hours
The shops are generally open from 9:00am - 5:30pm Monday to Friday (With the exception of late night shopping on Thursday nights where stores are open until 9:00pm). On Saturdays the shops are open from 9:00am – 5:00pm and Sunday the opening hours are 10:00am – 4:00pm. Most supermarkets are open until 10pm and are sometimes open all night. Corner stores, restaurants and snack bars around Sydney are usually open well into the night.
Markets
There are some excellent markets around Sydney throughout the week and every weekend where you can find many hidden treasures. The Rocks market in particular is extremely popular among visitors and local alike and has a range of specialty stores including quality, crafts, homewares and collectibles. Paddy’s markets are Sydney’s biggest market in the city. Most of the stalls sell new stock at heavily discounted prices such as clothing, accessories, CD’s and homewares. It is famous for its plentiful fresh fruit and vegetables at excellent prices making the markets worth a visit if you are in Sydney for a while.
Shopping Centres
The Sydney CBD is a shoppers dream with some of the best shopping centers in the city. Don’t miss your chance to shop in the famous Queen Victoria building- one of the most stunning examples of Victorian architecture in Sydney. This shopping centre is home to over 190 designer label and specialty stores and excellent eateries. Alternatively, you can visit Skygarden- a superb mix of fashion, food and homewares with over 30 retail outlets. Set in a chic and relaxed environment with stunning architectural features, Skygarden offers the discerning shopper the ultimate escape from the frantic City pace. While you’re shopping around the CBD be sure to visit Pitt St Mall and Strand Arcade, both filled with shopping delights.
Supermarkets
There are a variety of convenience stores and supermarkets available to purchase personal items and groceries. The most common supermarkets are Coles and Woolworths. Such items are also available at convenience stores scattered throughout the city, however, these are generally more expensive than the supermarkets.
Factory Outlets
Sydney has some of the best factory outlets, selling quality merchandise at heavily reduced prices. The most popular factory outlet in Sydney is DFO – Direct Factory Outlet – which is home to over 90 big name brands in the one building. Whether you are shopping for clothing, footwear, handbags and luggage, homewares or cosmetics – you can be sure you will find what you are looking for at DFO. The shops are open 7 days a week from 10am to 6pm and are located on the corner of Homebush Bay Drive and Underwood Rd, Homebush - near Sydney Olympic Park.
Another popular factory outlet located closer to the city is Birkenhead Point. Birkenhead Point is renowned for offering top designer labels at up to 70% off the retail price. With over 120 outlets ranging from fashion, food and homewares there is plenty to choose from. It is also home to supermarkets and major department stores such as Coles and David Jones.
