Nielsen Park

Nielsen Park is the headquarters of Sydney Harbour National Park. N. R. W. Nielsen who used to be the Minister of Lands in 1910-11 was the first trustee of Nielsen Park and the Park is named after him. Under the initiative of the Harbour Foreshores Vigilance Committee, the Nielsen Park was declared a public reserve in 1911. The Park is popular for its shady picnic grounds and scenic beaches protected by shark nets.
A 1.5-km bushland is an excellent walking strip that follows the western border of Vaucluse from the Nielsen Park to the Bayview Hill Road. Close to the park is Strickland House which was once home of John Hosking, the first Mayor of Sydney in 1842. The Carrarra marble fireplaces of the house gave it its original name that was Carrarra. Now the Strickland House serves as a convalescent hospital.
