Macquarie Place

Macquarie Place used to be the meeting place of the aborigines for holding their rituals. In the later years, it became part of the garden that adorned the first Government House.

It was conceived by the architect convict Francis Greenway. At one corner of Macquarie Place is an obelisk raised by Lachlan Macquarie. He was governor of NSW during the period 1810-1821. Sydney's first street lamp using whale oil for its fuel was erected in Macquarie Place in 1826. Today the spot is commemorated by three gas lamps that were gifted the Australian Gaslight Company.
