Green Point

Green Point is the northern tip of Watsons Bay. Also known as Laings Point, this is a place of historical significance and is indicated on the earliest navigation charts of Port Jackson.

In 1942, an anti-submarine boom net was constructed on Green Point or Laings Point to protect Sydney Harbour from submarine attack, spreading from Green Point to Georges Head on the north side of the Harbour. On 31 May 1942, three Japanese midget submarines tried to enter the Harbour during the night in a failed attempt to sink the Allied warships of World War II. Two of the midget submarines were destroyed before they could begin operation and the third midget submarine got caught in the anti-submarine boom net. In their desperate efforts to cut loose from the net, the crew detonated charges to destroy it, destroying themselves in the process. The whereabouts of the submarine were totally unknown until in 2006 some amateur scuba divers off the northern beaches hit upon the wrecks of the submarine. With the cessation of the World War II, the anti-submarine boom net was also done away with. One can still see the foundations of the winch house on Laings Point, Watsons Bay.
