World Heritage

The Greater Blue Mountains Area has been recognized as a World Heritage Area for its extensive biodiversity. The Greater Blue Mountains Area was recorded on the World Heritage List by the World Heritage Committee at its 24th session that was held at Cairns from November 27 to December 2, 2000.

The area does not comprise of mountains as the name would suggest in its literal sense but a deeply incised sandstone plateau. This region is believed to have protected the diversity of flora and fauna from climatic changes thus preserving several of their species from extinction. Its wide range of eucalypt habitats give home to ninety-one species of eucalypts, which comprises thirteen percent of the world total. Of these, twelve are believed to be found only in the Sydney sandstone region.

The Greater Blue Mountains Area provides a view of nature in all its glory with its craggy tablelands, steep cliffs, deep valleys and swamps abounding in extensive varieties of plant and animal life.
