Sydney is the state capital of New South Wales, located on the south-east coast of Australia. The city is also known as “the Harbour City” referring to the Sydney Harbour which is a key area around which the city of Sydney is developed. It was on the shores of Sydney Cove that the First Fleet under the leadership of Arthur Philip disembarked and established the first European colony in 1788. Now Sydney is populated by approximately 4.12 million people.

Sydney has been ranked the world’s number one city for the eighth consecutive year at the Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards in New York last week. Sydney outranked San Francisco, Paris, Rome and Melbourne.

More than 25,000 readers of the influential American travel magazine also voted Sydney the best city in the Australia-Pacific category for a record 21st year. Condé Nast Traveler readers rated global cities on a range of criteria including ambiance, friendliness, culture and sights, restaurants, lodging and shopping.

The Minister for Tourism, Jodi McKay, said this reward is a fantastic honour for the State’s tourism and hospitality sector and confirms what many residents already know - that Sydney is the best city in the world.
